Prime Minister of India Gulzarilal Nanda Biography in English

Gulzarilal Nanda was an Indian politician and economist who served as the Prime Minister of India twice in interim capacities. Here's a brief biography of Gulzarilal Nanda:-

Gulzarilal Nanda was born on July 4, 1898, in Sialkot, which was then part of British India (now in Pakistan). He obtained his master's degree in economics from Lahore University in 1921.

Nanda began his career as a lecturer in economics at Lahore University. He later moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) and worked as a professor of economics at the University of Bombay.

Nanda became involved in the Indian independence movement and joined the Indian National Congress. He actively participated in various movements led by Mahatma Gandhi, including the Quit India Movement in 1942.

After India gained independence in 1947, Nanda joined the Indian government. He held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Planning, Minister of Labour and Employment, and Minister of Home Affairs.

Gulzarilal Nanda served as the Prime Minister of India on two occasions, both in interim capacities:-

1.   First Term (1964):-  Following the death of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on May 27, 1964, Gulzarilal Nanda was appointed as the acting Prime Minister. He served in this capacity until June 9, 1964, when Lal Bahadur Shastri was elected as the new Prime Minister.

2.   Second Term (1966):-   After the sudden death of Lal Bahadur Shastri on January 11, 1966, Gulzarilal Nanda once again assumed the role of the acting Prime Minister. He served in this capacity until the Indian National Congress elected Indira Gandhi as the new Prime Minister.

After his tenure as Prime Minister, Gulzarilal Nanda continued to be active in politics and held various positions within the Indian National Congress. He also remained involved in public service and contributed to several committees and organizations focused on economic and social development.

Gulzarilal Nanda passed away on January 15, 1998, at the age of 99, leaving behind a legacy of service to the nation and contributions to Indian politics and economics. He is remembered for his integrity, dedication, and leadership during critical transitional periods in India's history.
